Tonight we'll begin our 25-hour journey back to LA from Capetown. The sun is shining, so we decided we had to try to get in a little bit more sightseeing. We tried to go to Robben Island. But we didn't have enough cash for the ferry tickets, and wanted to use credit cards. Classic Africa, we were told that it would take 20 minutes for a credit card transaction to go through, and the boat would need to leave by then. Very odd, because we have been using credit cards at every other restaurant and store in this country without problems. We were pretty frustrated, but decided we would try to find a cab to take us to see the penguins at Boulder Beach.
We easily found a taxi cab, so we asked the driver if he would take us to Boulder Beach. He said it would be very expensive, but we said we were prepared to negotiate a good deal. Let's do a replay of the negotiation...
Taxi Cab Driver: It's 500 Rand one way to the beach.
Nicole: OK, would you be willing to do a round trip for 1000 Rand? We won't stay for very long.
Taxi Cab Driver: No, I will do it for 600 Rand.
Nicole: Really? Lisa, get in the car!
It was a nice drive to Boulder Beach. Lisa and I had no idea where we were headed, and it felt like we were driving the wrong way the entire time, but our driver took great care of us. We made it to Boulder Beach in a little less than an hour. Then we spent a little less than an hour checking out the penguins. Kind of one of the best days of my life. So cool to see so many penguins. I freaking love these animals.
And when we got back to the hotel, I gave our taxi cab driver a nice, fat tip!
