Unforgettable Parker: Part 1

I hear that when your kids grow up, you start telling stories about all the "unforgettable" things that they did as little kids. Mostly I "hear" this because Jeremy and my parents are always telling us things that we did as kids, now that they are seeing Parker do things. Please note that Jeremy's parents tell very sweet stories about Jeremy all the time; my parents seem to tell stories about me that make me sound like I was either very bossy, a bit (a lot?) opinionated (bratty?), and in general, "challenging." They also tend to say things like, "Our prayers have been answered." Which means, of course, that they believe I now have a son who is just like me and will put them through all the hell I gave them through the years. (Which they now look back on lovingly, of course.)

Anyway, I feel like so much stuff is always happening, and I'm afraid I am going to forget it all. So I'm sure glad I have this blog. Get ready for a new hashtag: #UnforgettableParker. Here are a few things that he's done lately that I never want to forget.

1. The first time we flew with Parker, we were traveling to Ryan and Jess's wedding in Florida. We were sitting towards the back of the plane (with me back in school, I have no airline status and we never get upgraded anymore...) and right as the Fasten Seatbelt light went on Parker took the most massive dump of his life to date. (He was five months old.) I was still exclusively breastfeeding him, (or almost exclusively breastfeeding him) so it was the yellow mustard kind of poop. It went out his diaper, down his legs, up his back, and all over me. I laughed so hard I was crying and snorting. It was really disgusting. However, it ended up making us so thankful, because Parker's Poop also encouraged the woman sharing our row to get up and find a new seat! So after changing him (thankfully we packed a spare outfit) we had the entire row to ourselves for an overnight flight. #UnforgettableParker.

2. Before Parker learned to wave hello and good-bye, he finger-bumped everyone. Kind of like a "fist bump" but with his pointer finger. It would always make him laugh. #UnforgettableParker.

3. Every day when I would put Parker in his car seat to go to daycare with Jeremy at Camp Amgen, Parker would start to cry. Mostly because he hated to stop playing and get in his car seat. He loves Camp Amgen. Anyway, I could get him to stop crying by singing "If You're Happy and You Know It" and clapping his hands. It took three months of me doing this every day, but one Sunday morning Parker was playing in the corner of our living room (Parker Land) and he started clapping. It brought tears to my eyes, because I think it was the first time I ever taught him something. Now, all you have to say is "If you're..." and Parker will start to clap. You could be hungry / sad / angry / confused / whatever, and Parker will be with you, clapping and smiling. #UnforgettableParker.

4. I'm sure I taught Parker a lot of other things, too, but I started to teach him "hot" the past few weeks. When we place food on his high chair that is hot, I say, "Hot!" as I kind of touch the food with my hand and pull it away. He now likes to touch pretty much all food by saying, "Hah!" as he slaps it with his hand and laughs hysterically. #UnforgettableParker.

5. We recently had our first catch with Parker. Words cannot describe how much he enjoyed it, so I'll just share the video. #UnforgettableParker.

6. A couple weeks later, Parker took his very first steps while we were playing catch. The backstory is that Parker didn't quite grasp the "throwing" aspect of playing catch. For example, when Jeremy would throw Parker and me the ball, Parker would "catch" it with my help, then crawl back to Jeremy and hand him the ball. I guess we were really playing "fetch" more than "catch" with him. Anyway, one time, Parker got really excited, jumped out of my lap to catch the ball, and walked it a few wobbly steps back to Jeremy. We looked at one another and said, "Holy, shit! I think he just walked!" #UnforgettableParker.

7. Parker hated when I would pour water on his head in the bath until I one day took a bath with him and poured water all over myself. He thought that was hysterical, and now at ten months old, he loves it when I pour water on his head. Here is a picture of him after he had yet another amazing time in the bath. #UnforgettableParker.

If only he could stay in the tub all night...

8. The first time Parker said "Mom" happened because I wasn't paying attention to him. I was doing work on my laptop sitting on the couch. He was banging on my knee, because he rightfully wanted my attention. But I really HAD to finish what I was working on, so I moved over to the dining room table where I thought Parker wouldn't be able to bother me. Nope. He crawled right over to me and got under the table, then he again banged on my knee while saying, "Mum! Mum! Mum!" My work suddenly became so much less important than it was before. #UnforgettableParker.

9. The first time we gave Parker solid food, we chose to give him carrots. Back then, we were also on the "make babyfood yourself" bandwagon, so Jeremy took the time to steam and puree the carrots. Of course, since no baby really likes solid food the first time you give them it, Parker started gagging and making lots of hilarious faces. We now do feel bad for laughing at him, but it's a video worth sharing. #UnforgettableParker.

10. This past week during dinner, Parker started to make lots of noise like he was done with eating and wanted to get down and play again. So I took him out of his chair and set him on the ground, expecting him to crawl away and play while Jeremy and I finished eating. Indeed, Parker did crawl away for a few minutes; but then he crawled back over to me, grabbed my hand and stood up. He smiled. I smiled back. He then squatted, while still holding my hand -- for leverage now -- as his face got red, his eyes crossed a little, and he proceeded to take another massive dump. And just like #UnforgettableParker #1 (above) I laughed so hard I snorted and cried. #UnforgettableParker

OK, ten #UnforgettableParker stories is a pretty good start. I just told Jeremy that we will have to keep this list going for the next rest of Parker's life. And considering 20% of this list so far is made up of pooping stories, I might need to start another new hashtag: #ParkerPoop.

Parker, I love you and I love being your Mum!
